Summer 2020 General Information
The Iklaina Project is an archaeological field school open to students of both the University of Missouri-St. Louis and other universities. Students can receive 6 cr. hrs. as a combination of the following two courses:
1) Anthropology 3290, Current Issues in Anthropology: Greek History and Culture (3 credit hours)
2) Anthropology 2109, Archaeological Field School (3 credit hours)

The field school has two components:
-Archaeological Excavation of the Mycenaean site of Iklaina and work with the finds and ceramics in the lab. This entails:
-washing and sorting pottery lots
-identifying and dating pottery shapes
-cataloguing important ceramics and artifact finds
-sorting heavy fraction from flotation
-Evening lectures on Greek history and archaeology; Mycenaean archaeology; archaeological methods and techniques; science in archaeology
*Optional excursions can be arranged to Sphakteria, Mycenae, and Olympia
Dates and Costs
June 26 (departure from the US) – July 12, 2020 (these dates may vary slightly depending on the permit from the Greek government)
Costs for Academic Credit (6 credits)
–Program fees: $1855
–Tuition fees (includes Arts and Sciences supplemental fee): $2184 (for 6 cr. hrs.).
Costs for Non-Academic Credit
Program fees* $1855 (see below for what Program fees include and do not include)
Non-credit fees of $2,200.
*Program fees include:
accommodation in air-conditioned rooms with TV and private baths (double occupancy); most rooms (first-register first-serve basis) have breathtaking views of the bay of Navarino
buffet breakfast, light lunch, and full four-course dinner every day
daily transportation to and from the dig site
Program Fees Do Not Include:
Personal Expenses (basically your entertainment expenses): estimates: $100-$300
Airfare: ca. $1500 (Estimate. Students purchase airfare individually)
*Students are responsible for covering transportation cost from airport to Pylos; The project can arrange for optional bus transportation from the Athens airport to Pylos; in past years the cost was about $25 per person
